Modern English School was established in the year 1984. The journey started on 12th June 1984 with a small group of eleven students and six teachers. Initially classes started from I to VI. It has been observed that if we want to progress in life we always need to move uphill which is always accompanied with hurdles. This is exactly what the founder of this school Late. Mr Kuladhar Das believed in. He initiated the big task of setting up of a private English medium school in Odalbakra and confronted many problems on his way. He always believed that achieving excellence in life is not impossible if we work hard for it. To excel in life we always need to learn from our experiences and try to be pragmatic too. Same is the story behind Modern English School. If we look back and see closely we will find that Modern English School started with a very pragmatic approach since its inception and has always learnt from experiences. If we want to know about the history of the school we will have to go back to those days when Mr Kuladhar Das Sir served the police department and he was associated with the Assam Police Association (APA) in different capacities. Under his initiative the executive committee of the APA decided to start a school and proposed to name it Central Police School, Assam where Mr Das was appointed the Secretary of the school. He visited many schools like the Sainik School Goalpara, Assam Rifles Public School, Laitkor, Shillong,etc. to get a first hand experience about running a school. A lot of effort was put in but the General Body of the APA preferred to start the school when they would receive a grant from the state/central govt. for which they applied. By that time Mr Das had spent more than a year in the school's work and was very disappointed with this decision. So he decided that he would start a school on his own with the help of his friends - Mr Arunesh Debroy and Mr Praneswar Rajbongshi- his senior colleagues, Mr Gargeswar Das - his childhood friend, Mr Manmohan Das - his friend, and a few other friends. They named the school- Modern English School. This school came into its existence only because of untiring efforts of Late Mr Kuladhar Das and his friends. It is overwhelming and really unbelievable if we think of the pain taken by Sir. The founder of the school has always inspired each student and worker of the school to face any kind of adversities and work towards excellence. This inspiration has helped school to grow from strength to strength and reach or set new benchmarks for itself. We can very proudly say that this school has the potential today to surpass many other schools .It has been a long journey since 1984 but something that has not changed from the beginning till now is the emphasis on proper teaching learning environment. Mr. Kuladhar Das always asserted that each child is special and unique in its own way. Therefore, it is the positive learning environment that can bring about desirable changes in a child which can benefit society as a whole. According to him, if Modern English School has to grow as an institution, each and every member of this school must have determination, perseverance and patience. Today the school has classes from I-XII and more than 1500 students, 60 teachers, and a campus of more than 2 acres. At MES we try our level best to design curriculum, lesson plans keeping students level in mind and incorporate new technology in teaching-learning so that learning can be more closer to life. These efforts have helped school to win the International School Award from British Council for bringing the concept of globalisation in teaching learning process. We have just started and our journey towards excellence still continues
