Vice President Hamid Ansari warned that "failure" to properly educate and provide "productive employment" to millions of Indians, especially youth, will have "serious economic and social implications" for the country. A national daily reported that he said, By 2022, 63 per cent of our population will be in working age group. Also, we are one of those countries where working age population will be in far excess of those dependent on them till 2040. This demographic structure presents us with a potential demographic dividend which (if) tapped could add to our growth.

Ansari stated that socio-religious groups such as the SC, ST, Muslims and women along with people belonging to backward regions of the country lagging behind in education also lag behind in employment and political empowerment. He also pointed out that there are various challenges of access, equity and quality for an effective higher education which would form a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable society. He stated that a large number of educated, unemployed youth who feel disempowered could prove to be disruptive to the economic progress of the country.

He also gave a solution to this apparent issue by saying that the requirement today is to widen the reach, enhance affordability and improve quality of education so as to make it accessible to all sections of society. He said that the education sector must gear up to support the economic agenda of the nation by creating a job-ready and employable workforce.
