Newly born state Telangana has about 50 Lakh illiterates. To educate the people the state government has decided to launch a 100-day action plan and the training program will be conducted to achieve the goal of illiterate Free State.

As per newspaper reports, the state has the second-largest number of illiterates in the age group of 15-60 years in south India. Mahbubnagar has the most number of illiterates among the districts, followed by Medak and Nizamabad. In female literacy, Mahbubnagar finished last followed by Adilabad and Nizamabad.

So as to spread literacy in these districts, local scholars with knowledge of linguistic and dialects have been enrolled to prepare the teaching material. In the 100-day literacy programme, people will be taught words, alphabets, government projects, welfare schemes and festivals like Bathukamma.

The national literacy average is of 72.99 per cent, whereas the literacy rate in the state is 66.46 per cent. Mahbubnagar has the highest number of illiterates in the SC category, followed by Nizamabad and Medak, while in STs, Mahbubnagar has the lowest literacy rates, followed by Medak and Nizamabad.

The statement issued by the action plan government says that it is a matter of concern that literacy rate is lower than in some of the lower income states like Odissa, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. There are also huge differences in literacy rates between males and females and that of SCs and STs.

Improving the literacy rate in general and that of the SCs and STs in particular is a major challenge before the state government.

Literacy program would educate people in a better and simple way. People who are not able to study will be benefited by this move.
