Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh launched ‘Pehal’ – a vision document of the Shimla district administration for raising education standards.

The initiative aims at bringing about qualitative change in primary education (Prerna), educating people about forest rights, awareness on health, sanitation, launching anti-drug campaigns, generating jobs and empowering women.

Lauding the efforts of the district administration, the Chief Minister said Prerna, an important component of Pehal, would go a long way in result enhancement, resource nurturing and assessment for imparting and improving the learning levels in primary schools.

He said since primary education was a base on which all subsequent learning was done, the programme would help identify gaps and make teachers responsible. “I am happy to learn that 100 primary schools across Shimla district have been identified for launching Prerna,” Virbhadra added.

“As far as the health sector is concerned, we have to ensure that our surroundings are litter-free. As cleanliness is next to godliness, we have to aware the masses about safe sanitation and hygiene practices so as to remain healthy. Schoolchildren can contribute a lot to the initiative,” said the Chief Minister.

Educating people on forest rights and the benefits thereof were also under the area of operation of Pehal, said the DC. He added that an information, education and communication (IEC) campaign had been already launched.

The initiative also aims at building a resource base of semi-skilled and skilled women. The district administration is also trying to create/enhance the infrastructure for sports and recreational activities to take the young minds away from drugs under the Pehal’s anti-drug campaign.
