IDC to launch graduate design course

Bachelor of Design, a new four year course is to be launched from this academic year by the Industrial Design Center (IDC) which is the premier design institute of IIT Bombay. IDC had offered specialization in industrial design, visual communication, animation, interaction design, and mobility & vehicle design, but they were accessible only to post-graduates so far. This is the first time that the IDC has made available Design courses for under-graduates.


After completing 12th Std, students those who are willing to do design course can pursue the subject. The center already offers Masters and PhD programmes in design and adding a Bachelor’s programme would make design academics and practice at IDC more rigorous stated the Head of IDC, Prof BK Chakravarthy while making the announcement about the new courses IIT Bombay earlier this week.


He also said, “As we progress from the Knowledge Economy towards Creative Economy, there is an increasing need in India for skilled professionals in the area of design. Design can play a crucial role in the development of the nation and work towards improvement of quality of life for all”. The IDC also launched an integrated five-year dual degree programme combining Bachelor’s and Masters degrees, but students would be allowed to option of doing the course only after completing their third year in B Des.


The online registration to apply for the said course will start from April 10, 2015. Admissions to B Des will be done through Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) Students who have passed their Class XII or equivalent examination in 2014, or passed or appeared in 2015 from any discipline are eligible to apply. The admission test will be conducted on May 31 across nine cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai and Pune.
