Maharashtra government is pitching to include Marathi as a language for students of Class 1 to 8 studying under Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and International Boards (IB). The government is also mulling to teach Maharashtra's history and geography up to Class 5.

According to a report published in The Times of India, Maharashtra education minister Vinod Tawde met educational boards representatives in Mumbai and Pune on Friday in this regard.

A 13-member committee has been set up by him to establish co-ordination between central and international education boards and state board.

The committee consists of 10 members from the boards and three government representatives. The committee will meet once in three months and will give the review to the government every six months.

The meeting was held with the purview to establish district and council-level coordination with ICSE, CBSE and IB for improving the quality of education.

Many non-state boards are already teaching Marathi in schools for four years in the state. However, the problem arises due to unavailability of prescribed text for students up to class 8. In the meeting, Twade also took up the issue of starting of the academic year, reducing schoolbag weight, fee structure, holidays and providing value-added education.
