The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all the schools affiliated to it to recruit special educator with an objective to offer quality education to children suffering from autism and special learning disabilities.

The special educators, who have been trained to understand the needs of children, will focus on providing additional academic and extra-curricular support accordingly. The teachers are expected to work with children with sensory impairments, developmental disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, specific learning disabilities along with physical disabilities as they are emotionally vulnerable and can have behavioral difficulties.

The board says these students will be covered under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act-2009 or RTE Act. Besides, the modalities mentioned in the ACT will also be followed. According to the Act, the local authority or the state government would have to provide child with disability a special learning kit and support material.

CBSE joint secretary and in charge (Academic & Training) D T Sudharsan Rao said,  A circular directing the compulsory appointment of special educators has already been sent to all the affiliated schools.

These teachers will support students who are facing disability in the process of learning. The schools have also been provided guidelines regarding recruitment process and eligibility criteria of a special educator, he added.
