The First Friday of every May is observed as Space Day day is dedicated to the extraordinary achievements, benefits and opportunities in the exploration and use of space.  The goal of National Space Day is to promote math, science, technology and engineering education in young people to inspire them to pursue a career in science, especially a career in space-related jobs.

National Space Day was created in 1997 by the Lockheed Martin Corporation as a one-day event.  In 2001, due to its extreme popularity, former astronaut and Senator John Glenn expanded Space Day to International Space Day.

In India we celebrate space day to recognize the efforts of our ISRO Scientists.Indian Space Research Organization [ISRO] has made many remarkable achievements such as.

1. Chandrayaan-1 was India's first mission to the Moon. The unmanned lunar exploration mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor called the Moon Impact Probe. ISRO launched the spacecraft using a modified version of the PSLV on 22 October 2008 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.Chandrayaan-1 became the first lunar mission to discover existence of water on the Moon
   
2. The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), informally known as Mangalayaan, was launched into Earth orbit on 5 November 2013 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and has entered Mars orbit on 24 September 2014
   
3. Mangalayaan is the most affordable and a successful satellite to the planet mars.It was completed with just $74 million which is 7 rupees a kilometer.
   
4. The India stands as one of the best and successful commercial launcher of satellite in the world
