Sunil Chhetri is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Bengaluru FC in the I-League, on loan from Mumbai City in the Indian Super League. He is also the current captain of and all-time top goalscorer for the India national team, with 50 goals in 88 appearances. He was born on 3rd August 1984 in Secunderabad. His parents are KB Chhetri and Sushila Chhetri. He studied at Bahai School in Gangtok, Bethany’s in Darjeeling, Loyola School in Kolkatta and Army Public School at New Delhi. He joined Asutosh College but quit his studies in Class XII to take part in the Asian School Championship at Kuala Lumpur in October 2001. He is a Nepali by ethnicity. He started his career in football with the City Club in Delhi. He represented Mohum Bagan JCT FC then. He signed with East Bengal Club for the current season. He was selected as the AIFF player of the year 2007.
His international debut was 2007 Nehru Cup. India defeated Cambodia in the first game with 6 – 0. In this match he scored two goals. He also scored a goal in the match against Syria and another against Kyrgyzstan. In both these matches India won. In the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, he played for 90 minutes against Tajikistan that ended in draw and won with a score of 2 – 1 against Turkmenistan. In the final match against Tajikistan he scored a hat trick and this qualified India for 2011 Asian Cup for the first time. He was made as the national team captain for the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualification that is to take place in Malaysia. In 2011, he received the Arjuna Award for his performance. He scored a goal against South Korea at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup.
