Dr. Matsuno is a meteorologist and has taught at the Kyushu, Tokyo and Hokkaido Universities. He retired from professor’s position in March 1998 and since then had served as the Director-General of the FRCGC until March 2005. Currently he is working at the Center as Principal Scientist.He is a graduate of the University of Tokyo and earned Sc.D. degree from the university in 1966. In early days, he studied dynamics of the atmosphere and ocean in equatorial regions, and dynamics of the middle atmosphere. Recently he has been working as leader of climate modeling and global change research projects.He was awarded the Blue Planet Prize in 2013 for his contributions to solving global environmental problems.
