Rudi Putra is an Indonesian biologist who received a Goldman Environmental Prize in 2014 for his efforts to combat illegal logging, forest encroachment for palm oil production, and policies that will open endangered ecosystems to mining and plantation industries.Putra is a biologist who worked in Aceh Province, who received a prize of $175,000 from Goldman Environmental Prize.Putra was selected as the winner of the category Island and Island 's Nations.
Putra was recognized for his campaign to dismantle illegal palm oil plantations in the Leuser Ecosystem, Sumatra, a habitat for endangered orangutans, tigers, rhinos, and elephants, as well as activities regarding the plan to remove the protected status for Aceh's forests.These activities culminated in 2013 with the establishment of a petition that asked the Indonesian government to enforce conservation law and reject the proposal of Aceh.The petition was signed more than 1.4 million times, triggering awareness and wider international condemnation.
