Srijit Mukherji is a director, actor and screenwriter of Bengali cinema. He was a former economist from Bengali film industry also. In 2010, with the release of his first commercial Bengali movie 'Autograph' he came to limelight. This debut venture was both a critical and commercial success followed by the super success of his next movie, Baishe Srabon thus listing him name under those director's name who were able to achieve both critical and commercial fame with the first couple of movies. His third full-length feature film Hemlock Society, released in 2012 too was a huge success thus placing him among the top Bengali directors at present. His big break movie, Autograph gave him numerous awards for best film and best screenplay at many award functions. He was born on September 23, 1977 in Kolkata. He completed his schooling from Dolna Day School and South Point High School, Kolkata. He took degree in Economics from Presidency College and later completed MA and M Phil in Environmental Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He quit his PhD to join IRI Symphony, Bangalore as an econometrician and business analyst. But he couldn't stay in this job as his real dream was film making and theatre.Â
He got involved with English Professional Theatre Circuit in Delhi and Bangalore and started as an actor in plays like Madness, The Other Side of History and The Orchard of Banchharam. He wrote and directed Mindgame, an Indian adaptation of Twelve Angry Men in 2006. After a series of theatre ventures, he entered film world writing lyrics for Cross Connection in 2009. Then he wrote lyrics for movies like Madly Bangalee, Le chaka and Josh and finally entered direction field. Mishawr Rahasya and Maach Mishti & More are his latest released movies. His fifth film Jaatishwar won 4 national awards at India's 61st National Film Awards (2014). He has won the National Film Award for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for his sixth film Chotushkone at India's 62nd National Film Awards.Â
