Abhinav Singh Bindra is an Indian shooter and is a World and Olympic champion in the 10 m Air Rifle event. By winning the gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games. He was born on 28th September 1982 in Dehradun in Uttarkhand. At present he is living in Zirakpur in Mohali in Punjab. He belongs to a wealthy Punjabi Sikh Khatri family. His father is Dr. Manjit Singh. Dr. Amit Bhattacharjee is his mental coach. He has an indoor shooting range installed at his house. He was the youngest Indian that participated in the 2000 Olympic Games. His coach is Gabriele Buhlmann from Switzerland. He got 590 points in the 2000 Olympics with 11th place in the qualification round. However he could not take part in the finals as only top 8 can enter. He participated in the 1998 Commonwealth Games and won a Bronze medal in the 2001 Munich World Cup and this was a new junior world record with 597/600. He won six gold medals in different international meets in 2001. In 2001, he received Arjuna Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna ward. He won Gold in the pairs event in 2002 Commonwealth games held in Manchester. In the individual event he won silver medal.
He participated in 2004 Athens Olympics but failed to win a medal. He could only get eighth place in the finals. He won World Championship gold in Zagreb on 24th July 2006 and he was the first Indian to make this achievement. He won the Gold medal in the pairs event and Bronze medal in the singles event in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. He missed the 2006 Asian Games at Doha as he was suffering from back injury at that time. He studied BBA in the University of Colorado in US. He is working as the CEO of Abhinav Futuristics which is the distributor of Walther arms in India. He is the ambassador of state run Steel Authority of India. He has received Padma Bhushan award in 2009.
