Rajashree Birla is an
Indian philanthropist. Married young to Aditya Birla, scion of the Birla family
of business magnates, Rajashree devoted herself to the care of a large India
joint family and the nurture of two children. After they grew up, and sometime
after the untimely death of her husband in 1995, Rajashree directed her efforts
towards CSR and charity, developing a very large philanthropic organization
funded by her family. In 2011, the Government of India honoured her with the
Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for her services to society.
She was born in 1948 in Madurai, Tamilnadu, India. She is the Chairperson of
the Advisory Board of the University of Kanchipuram. She is Member of the
Advisory Board of "The Research Society For The Care, Treatment and
Training of Children in Need of Special Care", Mumbai, and also a Trustee
of "Population First", India, and of BAIF Development Research
Foundation, Pune. Mrs. Birla is a Member of the prestigious Tirumala Tirupathi
Devasthanams Development Advisory Council. Mrs. Birla is a Member of the
Executive Committee of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti from September 2003
to September 2006.
