About Institution

Bidhannagar College, Government of West Bengal, was established in 1984 in Salt Lake (BF-142), with the aim of providing quality education to students of Salt Lake and adjoining areas. Honours courses in a limited number of subjects were offered at the time, owing to shortage of space. Formerly the College was affiliated to Calcutta University. From 2008 onwards, the college is affiliated to West Bengal State University, Barasat. The college has made considerable progress since its inception and a new building was constructed at EB-2, Sector-I, Salt Lake in 2001. At present, a new six-storey building with modern architectural design is under construction and will house the Humanities and Social Science departments, Library, the administrative section and an auditorium. The college now boasts of 16 Undergraduate and 3 Post-graduate departments. Bidhannagar College celebrated its Silver Jubilee on a grand scale in 2008-09.

In 2006, Bidhannagar College was accredited with B++ grade by NAAC. In 2012, Bidhannagar College was granted financial support by the Department of Science and Technology on the recommendations of the FIST Advisory Board (FISTAB). The college possesses a centrally controlled LAN-connected networking facility. Besides this, a number of Broad Band Connections with unlimited download facility, sponsored by the MHRD, Govt. of India, has been set up for academic and administrative use. With financial assistance from the UGC as a NAAC-accredited science-teaching college, a 8-KW solar-panel has been installed by the WEBREDA.

The college provides a number of facilities for academic as well as co-curricular activities. Apart from regular academic programmes, UGC-sponsored Seminars, talks, conferences, etc are held throughout the year. Facilities for outdoor and indoor games are available within the college premises. Cultural programmes are held on different occasions such as Basanta Utsab, Rabindra Jayanti, etc. in which students, teachers and non-teaching staff members participate whole-heartedly. The Students’ Union holds an annual fest which is very popular. The NSS Unit of the college works actively towards arousing social awareness through programmes such as Blood-donation camps, Eye-camps, etc. Subsidiary courses such as computer training program and NET/SET coaching are available.
