Book Description

Based on Persian, Arabic and Turki sources as available in English translations as well as supplemented by the contemporary travellers' accounts and the factory records of the European companies from the beginning of the sixteenth century onwards, the work attempts to analyse the history of education in Medieval India as a part of the wider study of history of society, social history broadly interpreted with the politics, the economics and the religion put into it. It analyses the advent of the Islam and the nature of the Islamic rule in the country, the contributions made by the Delhi Sultans and the Mughal Emperors, the Provincial Governors and the Nobles to the promotion of learning and the extent of vocational and Hindu learning in Medieval India. It also examines the nature of female education and the development of vernacular languages including Hindi and the emergence of Urdu as the largely spoken language among the Muslims and of village schools by the end of our period and finally adds an epilogue critically summarising the findings of the present research on education in Medieval India. Written in a clear, simple and lucid style, the work not only meets the requirements of the graduate and post-graduate students of the history of education but also holds the attention of the scholars interested in Medieval India.
