Established in 1889, the Department of Law is one of the oldest professional faculties at Bareilly College, Bareilly, with a long and illustrious history. Initially degree programme in Law was affiliated to the Allahabad University in 1889; later in 1927 this affiliation was shifted to newly formed Agra University and finally to Rohilkhand University in 1975 when it was established in Bareilly city. The University is now known by its new name Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University.Today, it is one of the biggest Law Departments affiliated to University, with a dynamic academic and social community with 14 full-time faculty members and 06 temporary teachers, as well as approximately 1500 undergraduate students. Guest lectures by eminent faculties are also organized periodically, so as to provide wider academic exposure to students. The Faculty’s rich academic programme is supplemented by its many legal clinics and public interest programs, and its close links to the District Legal Services Authority, Bareilly. The alumni of this department enjoy rewarding careers in every sector of Indian society and some of them remain involved in many aspects of life at the law Department.Housed in a beautiful, historic building, the Department also features modern facilities, including a newly erected Moot Court and a rich Law Library.Law Department’s strong history of 118 years is matched by its innovative approach to education and professional practice. Its commitment to excellence in legal education is its distinctive feature. This innovation is reflected in the seminar style teaching of its undergraduate programme. The Law Department places special emphasis on Jurisprudence, international and comparative law, maintains a strong profile in taxation, corporate and criminal law, and delivers programmes in specialized areas such as environmental law.The Department of Law offers a three year LLB course. Students applying for admission should have graduated with at least 40% marks. The course begins in August and admission procedures generally begin in July. Admission is granted through a common entrance test conducted by the University. Notification for admission is published by M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, which is expected by the end of April. 21 % of the seats are reserved for SC candidates, 2% for ST candidates and 27% for OBC candidates. 3% seats are reserved for physically handicapped candidates, 2% for ‘Dependents of Freedom Fighters’ and 01% for Ex. Army Persons in horizontal reservation. Initially Degree classes in law were conducted in the evening. However, Law classes run now in the afternoon from 12.40 hrs. IST since 1997
