Government Arts College(MEN) , Krishnagiri was started in the year 1964. The interest shown by the people of this educationally backward area of Tamil nadu and the donations received from the public was instrumental in Government of Tamil Nadu starting this college. This college was started by the Honorable Chief Minister M.Bhaktavatchalam on 15.10.1964. This college was started in 1964 with three sections in PUC and after remaining four section is started. In the year 1965-degree course in Mathematics, History and Tamil Literature were started. The college was shifted to the new building constructed at a cost of 8.50 Lakhs in land bought by the college committee in August 1970. The new building was declared open by the then the Governor. His excellency K.K Sha on 14-10-1970. in the year 1971 first floor was added to the existing building at a cost of Rs 2 lakhs. English literature and Zoology degree course were started in the year 1971-72 and Botany degree course was started in 1972-73. Degree course in physics was started in the year 1979-80. Post graduate course in Botany was introduced in 1980-81 followed by Mathematics in 1981-82 which enabled the college to be evaluated as a PG institution. Madras university recognized this college as a research institute in 1982-83. As a result part time and full time M.Phil course were introduced from 1984-85. In 1990-91 Degree course in Chemistry and in 1999-2000 Degree course in Computer Science were introduced.

From the academic year 2003-2004 the following course were introduced on self supporting basis M.A, M.Phil, Ph.D, B.Lit inTamil, B.B.A, B.Com, and B.Sc Microbiology. The above courses were converted as regular course from the academic year 2007-08. The Student Co-Operative store is functioning in the college campus for the past twenty five years through which study materials and stationaries being supplied to the student in Concessional rate. The Parent Teacher Association have been started in the Academic Year 2006-2007 and also Old student Association started in the same academic year, college canteen functioning well from the academic year 2006-07. Based on the Govt Order following shift -2 classes were started from the year 2007-2008. B.Sc Chemistry, B.Sc Computer Science, B.Com, B.B.A , B.Lit Tamil.
