Govt. Polytechnic for Women Srinagar, established in the year 1986 at Saida Kadal, Srinagar, was first of its kind in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The intention was to develop this Polytechnic as a full-fledged technical institution for girls in the state. Initially, four departments viz Electronics, Costume Designing, Beauty Culture, Cosmotology and Dermatology, Secretarial Practice and Office Management was started. The library was also established in the same year (1986) with the good collection of more than 7000 books (text, supplementary, reference books). The library had achieved a great name in a very short span of its establishment and was known as Model Polytechnic Library.
