The college began its journey in the year 1949 as Jhargram Agriculture College. Practically, it is the brainchild of the then King of Jhargram - Late Raja Narasingha Malladev Bahadur. He donated more than 320 acres of land for the development of the college. The college was affiliated under Calcutta University till 1985. Teaching in new building started in 1950. Government of West Bengal took over this institution and renamed it as Jhargram Raj College (JRC). The first batch of students sat for I.Sc. (Agr.), I.A. and I.Sc. Examination in 1951, while B.Sc. (Agr.) (Pass & Hons) course was introduced from 1953. I.Sc. (Agr.) course continued here since 1949 and in 1961 P.U. (Agr.) was introduced. From the year 1962, this course was abolished forever. Nowadays the college is offering to the undergraduate students a whole array of subjects from three disciplines of Arts, Commerce and Science. The college is also offering postgraduate courses in Bengali, Chemistry and Zoology.On 8th May, 1999, the college celebrated the completion of 50 years of its glorious existence.
