Union minister Maneka Gandhi wrote to HRD minister Smriti Irani and finance minister Arun Jaitley seeking education loans at concessional rates for girl children.
Union minister Maneka Gandhi has been making efforts to raise the level of education among girls in the country. She introduced the famous 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme, which was extensively promoted and supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Yet again, the women and child development minister has come forward to seek support from HRD minister Smriti Irani and finance minister Arun Jaitley so as to provide cheap education loans with less rate of interest to girl child.
Why is concessional education loan being provided only to girls?
Maneka wrote a note to Irani saying, "When it comes to sending children for higher education, parents often distinguish between girls and boys... The girls often get denied the privilege of higher education or specialised courses only because parents do not wish to take a loan for their daughter's education
While the minister has been making every effort to help the girl child, it's a "small incentive" among many other initiatives being taken by the ministry.
Here's a look at a number of schemes started by the ministry to support girls in the country:
The ministry has started the world's largest outreach programme to support girl education, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). The ICDS provides a number of facilities, such as:
Supplementary nutrition
Immunization
Health check-up
Referral services
Pre-school non-formal education
In order to reach the needy, the ministry is joining hands with NGOs
The ministry has initiated the process of universalisation of ICDS and Kishori Shakti Yojana. Under this initiative, it has launched a nutrition programme for adolescent girls.
