The University Grants Commission (UGC) declared that August 9-23 will be observed as "Freedom Fortnight" or "Azadi(Freedom) 70, Yaad Karo Kurbani (Remember the sacrifice) by all universities and affiliated colleges across the country. Jaspal Sandhu, UGC secretary said that this celebration is declared as India i about to enter the 70th year of independence on August 15.
Students all over the country are asked to celebrate this in an appropriate manner. A set of activities has also been released by UGC for all universities and colleges during the freedom fortnight. The commission has asked the officials to take up at least one activity from the list of 15 in a befitting manner. The colleges will also perform a mass singing of national anthem at 11 am on August 23. UGC has also directed officials to make a report along with photographs and videos, on the basis of activities conducted by universities and affiliated colleges.
An official of the Shivaji University, Kolhapur said that the concept is the brainchild of ministry of human resource development (MHRD) and through UGC it has directed the institutions to celebrate the independence day for a fortnight and also arrange a series of events to cherish the spirit of freedom struggle and to influence the younger generation in patriotism. They are quite sure students will participate in the events with enthusiasm and spread the word with their friends as well.
