The University Rover Challenge (URC) is the premier robotics competition in the world for college students which challenges them to design and build the next generation of Mars rovers. This year it was organized by Mars Society and held at Mars Research Desert Station, Utah, USand.
In which a team of 26 students from various disciplines of one of the top ranking universities in India - SRM University has took part and secured ninth rank in the world, first in Asia and first in India out of 63 teams which had registered for the competition. Only 30 were able to clear the Critical Design Review (CDR) round. The university performed quite well in the semi-finals and got into the top 15.
As a part of the competition, these top 15 teams had to go through various tasks to check the maneuverability and stability of the rover. The teams had to perform five different events decided by URC over the course of two days, which included terrain traversing, astronaut assistance, equipment servicing and science task .
Balavivek, Team leader said that overall they have performed well which got them the ninth position. He also said that SRM university had given them a great opportunity to showcase their potential in the international arena.
