The Indian Institute
of Management-Bangalore (IIMB) will introduce free Massive Open Online Courses
(MOOC) from July.
Sitting at home, now you can learn
statistics, IT and operations management from top professors of IIM. The
institute will offer two Massive Open Online Courses free from next month and one
more will start in August and another in October. The registration for three of
these short-term courses has begun. IIMB is the first Indian Institute of Management to tie up
with edX, a MOOC provider founded by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, to offer online courses. At least 10 IIM-B professors have signed
up to design and teach. The plan is to increase the number of courses to eight
by December and 10 by April, 2016.
IIM-B director Sushil Vachani said that the delivery of
education, while radically different today, is still limited. We cannot reach a
sizeable population through real estate-based education. If PM Modi's Make in
India has to succeed, the skills of a vast majority have to be upgraded.
Imagine a future where small business and kirana store owners can take a short
management programme and implement this in their business.
Vachani said there are plans to earn revenue
through executive programmes for corporates. Designing and offering a course
online cost the institute Rs 18 lakh. He also did not rule out tying up with
other IIMs and IITs to provide more courses. The institute is working on
courses in vernacular languages, beginning with Hindi and eventually in
Kannada, Bengali and Tamil. Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/
