Residential Women's Polytechnic College, Payyanur was established under World Bank Assisted Technician Education Project (WBATEP) in 1991. Electronics & Communication, Electronics & Instrumentation, Computer Engineering and Computer Application & Business Management are the four Diploma level emerging courses offered in this Institution. It is the only polytechnic college for women in the state of Kerala with a "residential" status.
Payyanur is famous for its role in the struggle for national independence, and also called the "second Bartholdi" since at Payyanur, salt was made from the sea water concurrently with Mahatma Gandhi's Salt Sathyagraha. The institution is situated on a serene hill top at Muthiyalam, 5 Km from the Payyanur town and the NH17. Spread in an area of scenic 20 acres of land, this institute has been catering to the industry by providing high quality technician manpower and offering sustainable development to the nearby villages through its initiatives like Community Development Through Polytechnic Scheme, sponsored by the MHRD, Government of India. The institution has been faithful to its commitment to enhance the living standards of women, especially of the Malabar area, as almost 80% of the students of this institution belongs to the Malabar region- marginalized both socially and economically. Further, this institution has the prestige of having an MOU with M/s Mando India Limited, Chennai, an OEM to Hyundai, India, to have Industry-Institution knowledge sharing partnership, and 27 students of this institution has been selected for employment.16 students are placed at Mando India Steering Limited. This institution is entrusted to setup the Women Resource Centre, a prestigious project under Gender Awareness implemented by Kerala State Women Development Corporation Thiruvananthapuram.
Residential Women's Polytechnic College provides high quality equitable and accessible training and education and contributes to the social and economic development of the society in general, and to the women community in particular. Specifically, it serves the human resource requirements of the Industry, Business and the society through post – secondary technician education, continuing and non formal education and training programmes that respond to the rapid technological and social changes. It strives to achieve this mission with the help of a dedicated and competent staff team in an appropriate learning environment.
