The "Golden City of India" Jaisalmer, named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king in 1156 AD. is situated on India Pakistan border. "Jaisalmer" means "The Hill Fort of Jaisal". Tourism is a major industry in Jaisalmer. The Government of India initiated departmental exploration for oil in 1955-56 in the Jaisalmer area. Oil India Limited discovered natural gas in 1988 in the Jaisalmer basin. Musicians and dancers are also a major cultural export from Jaisalmer to the rest of the world. Manganyar musicians have played the world over, and Queen Harish, the dancing desert drag queen, is touring the world and has featured in international movies
Shri MLS Government PG Mahila Mahavidyalaya was established on 12 August 1998, on the request of elite class of the city and the Shikhsha Samiti, to fulfill the need of women education, with the aim to provide quality education to a girl student irrespective of caste, creed and economic background. The college was established with a donation of Rupees 51 lakhs from Shri Shiv narain Sanwal in the memory of his father Shri Mishri Lal Sanwal. The college has been therefore named after him. The Rajasthan Government contributed Rupees 50 lakhs.
The college was started with faculty of Arts in History, Hindi Lit., Sociology and Political Science subjects. In the session 2010-11 graduate courses in Science and Commerce and Post graduate Course in Political Science were also started.
