M. C. Shah founded the Navgujarat Arts & Commerce College. The western parts of Ahmedabad was just beginning to develop and a morning College which would cater to the growing middle class was of paramount importance.With a handful of teachers and a few hundred students, the campus has now grown to a well-established and recognized hub of academic activity. In 1963 the two college of Arts & Commerce were born out of the original one. In 1995 Navgujarat Arts College was renamed Smt. S. R. Mehta Arts College in honor of the philanthropist Smt. Shushilaben of Mumbai.
