About Institution

Started on Feb 1, 1892 with only 31 students St. Albert’s school has now completed 121 years of its existence. The school was established by Italian Missionary, Vicar General Rev. Fr. Candice, under the direction from then Archbishop of Verapoly. The land in which St. Albert’s School now locates was then known as Thumbaparambu among localities, a name given due to the abundance of Thumba (Lucas aspera) in it. Rev Fr. Candice was the first Manager of the School. This land was donated by Maharaja of Cochin. On August 4, 1896, the school was elevated to the level of Lower Secondary School.

The two Gothic buildings which have been important land marks of Cochin City were constructed in 1897. The design and construction was carried out by Mr. Raiappan of Kottar village in erstwhile Travancore State. In 1898 due to shortage of students at St. Philomina’s High School in Koonammavu, its students and teachers were incorporated into St. Albert’s School, which had greatly helped our school to be upgraded to a High school level, and on Jan 11, 1898 formal up-gradation was done. On August 18, 1898 school got the recognition of Madras University. In 1907 a new building was constructed at the north east corner of the school ground, which was meant for hostel and chapel, school chapel still resides at this building. In 1963 Teachers Training Institute was established.

The construction of Pagoda buildings was completed in 1984 and the new building of High School (Honey Comb) was completed in 1994. The school has celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1955 and Centenary in 1992. In order to commemorate the centenary an open stage was constructed in 1992 in the memory of Msgr. Chakiamurry in the main ground of the school. In 1998, St. Albert's High School was elevated into St. Albert's Higher Secondary School. The Higher Secondary School has each batch of Science, Commerce & Humanities batches. Higher Secondary section is on first floor of the Pagoda building where classes functions and on first floor of East block of Gothic building where Laboratories functions. High School section is at Honeycomb building. UP and LP sections are at ground floor of Pagoda building.

Being the Alma Mater for many generations of Cochinites, St. Albert’s School will always bring colourful memories to students of the past and the present.
