Namrata Rao is a successful and national award winning editor associated with Bollywood at present. Started with the National award winning movie, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008), she edited films like Ishqiya (2010), Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Love Sex aur Dhokha (2010) and Kahaani (2012). In 2012, her work for the movie Kahani, starring Vidya Balan earned her National Film Award for Best Editing and Filmfare Award for Best Editing. A winner of Filmfare awards twice, she earned it for the first time for the controversial film known for its camera work - Love Sex aur Dhokha (2010). She was born into a middle-class family in Delhi. Her father was with BHEL and she had thought she would end up in Infosys or TCS. She completed graduation in IT from Delhi University, and took a job in programming field, very soon to find that it's not her cup of tea. She was interested in doing something creative and didn't want to get stuck to an office job with repeated process. She joined a graphic design studio in Delhi, but she found her job to be boring. Later she worked as a production assistant for the programme 'Double Take' with NDTV. It was during her stint in NDTV, she studied the basics of editing and sound design.
She soon quit the job to join Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata, to take a PG diploma. She specialized in editing and started off with short films and documentaries. She edited Sanghamithra Karmakar's 'Baba Black Beard' and Shyamal Karmakar's 'I'm the very Beautiful' which were shown in several international film festivals. Dibakar Banerjee gave her the first Bollywood break, for the movie 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' There was no turning back after that. Worked with all leading production houses like Yash Raj Films - 2 states (2014), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) and Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) are among her prestigious projects.
